How does the theory quiz fit into SwimSafer certification?
Every SwimSafer stage has two compulsory parts: an in-pool practical assessment and the online theory quiz. Both components are required for certification, and treating the quiz as a formality is one of the quickest ways to lose a hard-earned practical pass.
CAMS, the Centralised Assessment Management System, is what ties the two results together. Since July 2025, CAMS issues e-certificates only once the practical and the theory quiz are both passed. The certificate then reaches you through FileSG, using the email address entered during the quiz.
That linking step is where families run into trouble. The quiz and the practical must sit under the same participant profile, so a spelling difference in a name, a mistyped identity number or an unpaid registration can stop the certificate being generated, even when your child has passed everything. None of these problems relate to swimming ability, which is why they feel so frustrating. They may be fixable once you know where to look.
How do you access and take the quiz on CAMS?
The quiz appears in your CAMS account once your practical registration has been validated. Work through these steps in order:
Sign in to the CAMS participant account you used to register for the practical assessment.
Check that the participant details match the practical registration exactly: full name, NRIC, FIN or birth certificate number, date of birth and email.
Go to “My Quizzes”, as the CAMS information guide describes, and select the quiz for your child’s stage.
Accept the terms, then start the quiz.
Keep going until you reach 90%. The step-by-step quiz guide confirms that multiple attempts are allowed.
Screenshot the pass page and keep it. Your child’s e-certificate link goes to the email address you entered.
Pro Tip: Sit beside your child for the first attempt and use your own email address, so the FileSG certificate link lands in an inbox you check.
Private assessments use the CAMS quiz, while some MOE school pathways host the quiz through a separate go.gov.sg link, so confirm which route applies to your child.
What registration deadlines and extension rules apply?
Timing is where most parents slip, so plan backwards from the assessment date. Registration and payment must be validated before the closing deadline, set by CAMS, and your tagged coach has to validate the registration for it to count.
Register and pay on CAMS before the registration closing deadline.
Check that your coach has validated the registration, because an unvalidated entry is not a valid one.
Pass the quiz within seven days after the practical. Missing this voids the practical result, and it is the most commonly missed requirement.
If you need more time, apply in CAMS for the one-time one-month extension before the seven-day window closes. The administrative fee is S$5.
The extension only works if you apply before the deadline, so do not wait for day seven to find out the quiz will not fit your week.
What does the quiz cover and how can you practise?
The quiz draws on five core areas: personal safety and survival, environmental awareness, health awareness, emergency situations and rescue techniques. Personal safety includes the Water Smart Code and the use of personal flotation devices (PFDs), and the Water Smart Code is worth learning word for word: go together, know the dangers, take safety advice, float and wave, learn how to help.
Personal safety and survival: the Water Smart Code and when and how to wear a PFD.
Environmental awareness: recognising hazards at pools, beaches and open water.
Health awareness: staying well before, during and after swimming.
Emergencies and survival: recognising an emergency and responding sensibly. Survival techniques appear from Stage 2, as the Stage 2 criteria show.
Rescue techniques: the four-step rescue process is tested at the higher stages.
Questions are typically multiple choice, such as picking the safest response to a hazard or identifying the correct way to use a PFD. For practice, try our sample SwimSafer questions and answers . Older participants who like structured revision can also build flashcards and practice questions from their notes on Examo .
What should you check when the quiz or certificate goes missing?
Most blocked certificates trace back to a handful of fixable errors. Run through this list before contacting anyone:
Compare the spelling of the participant’s name, identity number and email against the practical registration. A mismatch stops certificate generation.
If the quiz does not appear, confirm that the coach has validated the registration and that payment went through, then log out and back in with the participant account.
If the quiz is passed but the certificate is absent, check the email entered on the quiz, including the spam folder. Our guide on how to retrieve the SwimSafer certificate walks through it.
For linking problems, write to swimsafer.enquiries@sgaquatics.org.sg with the correct identifying details so CAMS can match the assessment and quiz.
Pro Tip: Put the participant’s name, stage and assessment date in the subject line of your email, so the team can find the record quickly.
How do we avoid deadline risk with our own students?
Our advice is simple: complete the quiz within the required window after the practical assessment. Before assessment day, confirm your account, payment, exact personal details and the correct stage, and screenshot the pass. In class, our coaches weave in revision and sample questions alongside the pool skills, so children are ready for both parts.
Why the deadline matters more than the questions
The quiz itself is rarely the obstacle. With unlimited attempts and a clear set of topics, most children get through it with a little revision. What catches families out is the calendar and the paperwork, yet most advice online focuses on memorising answers.
We think the sensible order of priorities is this: first, understand the seven-day rule; second, make sure the profile details are identical everywhere; third, revise the Water Smart Code and PFD basics. Treat the quiz as a safety lesson, because that is what it is, rather than a hurdle to clear at the last minute.
The conventional wisdom also undersells how early you can act. Plan to complete the quiz within the required window after the practical assessment. A child who has already passed the theory can walk into the pool assessment focused only on swimming.
