01You cannot see the bottom of a river. What should you assume?
Answer: Hidden objects, unknown depth and other hazards may be present
You cannot judge safe depth or underwater hazards by looking at the surface. Do not enter unknown or prohibited water.
02At a lifeguarded beach with red-and-yellow swimming flags, where should you swim when conditions permit?
Answer: Between the flags, following lifeguard advice and adult supervision
Use the designated supervised swimming area and obey local signs and lifeguards. Flags do not remove the need for adult supervision.
03You pass a drainage canal after heavy rain. What is the safe choice?
Answer: Stay away from the canal and its banks
Stormwater can rise quickly and flow strongly. Keep away rather than testing the water or playing at the edge.
04Who should wear an appropriate, correctly fitted PFD during kayaking?
Answer: Everyone taking part, including strong swimmers
Swimming ability does not prevent an unexpected capsize. Wear the appropriate approved flotation equipment before setting off.
05Your PFD rides up over your chin when checked. What should you do before the activity?
Answer: Ask the instructor to check the size, fit and fastenings
A PFD must fit correctly and be secured as designed. Ask for a suitable size and a fit check before going on the water.
06During supervised Stage 3 practice, you reach the PFD. What is the priority before swimming on?
Answer: Fit and fasten it correctly as taught
The Stage 3 sequence includes fitting a PFD in the water. Practise only under qualified supervision; simply holding it is not the same as wearing it correctly.
07When using a taught survival stroke to reach nearby safety, how should you move?
Answer: Calmly, with controlled breathing and relaxed movements
Relaxed, controlled survival swimming helps conserve energy and maintain breathing. Choose the technique you have been taught for the situation.
08You have asthma or another condition that may affect swimming. What should happen before a session?
Answer: Follow your clinician's advice and tell the responsible adult, instructor and relevant pool staff
An individual medical and emergency plan may be needed. Informing staff is helpful but is not medical clearance or a replacement for professional advice.
09A swimmer is upright and not making progress, but is not shouting. What should you do?
Answer: Alert the lifeguard immediately
Drowning can be quiet. Lack of shouting does not mean the swimmer is safe; get trained help immediately.
10Why does swimming well in a pool not make every open-water location safe?
Answer: Currents, waves, temperature and watercraft create different risks
Open water has changing hazards that may not exist in a pool. Use permitted supervised areas and follow local safety advice.
