SwimSafer Stage 5 (Silver) Practice Quiz
Silver practice develops judgement for water activities and more demanding survival situations. Learn why flotation equipment, heat conservation and careful preparation must work together.
These are Oyougu's English practice questions, not official, leaked or guaranteed SwimSafer test questions. Stage grouping is our recommended practice progression, not an official examination allocation. Online practice does not replace supervised swimming lessons or qualify anyone to perform a rescue.

01What is H.E.L.P. intended to do when supported by suitable flotation in cold water?
Answer: Reduce heat loss while keeping your airway clear
The Heat Escape Lessening Posture reduces heat loss. It needs suitable flotation support; do not force a posture that puts your face underwater.
02In supervised H.E.L.P. practice with a suitable PFD, which posture is taught?
Answer: Draw the knees towards the body and keep the arms close, with the airway clear
Keeping the limbs close helps conserve heat. Keep the airway clear and follow your instructor; flotation and personal fit affect the posture.
03Can you assume every item called a PFD will turn an unconscious wearer face-up?
Answer: No, capabilities depend on the design, rating, fit and conditions
Buoyancy aids and lifejackets have different capabilities. Even lifejacket performance depends on type and conditions; use equipment suited to the person and activity.
04Before kayaking, what should the group check as well as fitting appropriate PFDs?
Answer: Weather, local conditions, hazards and the organiser's safety advice
Plan for weather, wind, waves and obstacles before setting off. Cancel or change plans when conditions or official advice make the activity unsafe.
05What should you pay attention to during a boat's safety briefing?
Answer: Emergency exits, lifejacket use and crew instructions
Know where safety equipment and exits are and how to follow crew instructions before an emergency occurs.
06A friend says UV protection is needed only from noon to 2 pm. What is a better rule?
Answer: Check the UV conditions and use protection; UV risk is not limited to a two-hour window
UV exposure varies with time and conditions. Use shade, clothing and sunscreen rather than treating a narrow time window as a guarantee of safety.
07A pool looks deep and clear. Is that enough reason to dive in?
Answer: No, dive only where permitted, with confirmed suitable depth and trained supervision
Appearance alone does not establish safe diving depth or clearance. Follow facility rules and qualified instruction; never dive into unfamiliar water.
08You are unusually thirsty and tired during outdoor swimming. What should you do?
Answer: Tell the instructor, stop for safe rest and hydration, and get help if unwell
Thirst and unusual tiredness can signal a problem. Stop and tell an adult; symptoms are not a diagnosis and persistent or severe illness needs medical help.
09A friend suggests throwing a stick into a river to prove it is safe to swim. What should you say?
Answer: A surface observation cannot establish safety; stay in permitted supervised areas
Surface movement does not reveal all currents, depth or hazards. Do not test unknown water by entering it or leaning over the bank.
10During supervised Silver practice, why practise throwing a PFD rather than swimming to a struggling partner?
Answer: It provides flotation while keeping the helper out of the water
Silver includes a land-based PFD throw. Get trained help in real emergencies; swimming ability alone does not qualify you for contact rescue.
