01A friend invites you to swim. What should you do before going?
Answer: Ask your parent or carer and arrange adult supervision
Always ask permission before going near water. Children need a responsible adult actively supervising, even after swimming lessons.
02Where can you check the safety rules at a pool you have not visited before?
Answer: Read the signs and ask the lifeguard or pool staff
Read and follow posted rules and ask pool staff if anything is unclear. Rules reflect hazards at that particular pool.
03Your friends start running and pushing beside the pool. What is the safe choice?
Answer: Walk carefully and do not push
Wet pool surrounds can be slippery. Running and pushing can cause falls or an unexpected entry into water.
04You notice a full, uncovered bucket where a young child can reach it. What should you do?
Answer: Ask an adult to empty it and store it safely
Even buckets can be a drowning hazard for young children. Tell an adult rather than playing with or moving a heavy bucket yourself.
05You see someone struggling in a public pool. What should you do first?
Answer: Alert the lifeguard and shout for adult help
Get trained help immediately and stay out of the water. Entering to rescue someone can put you in danger too.
06You feel ill before your swimming lesson. What should you do?
Answer: Tell your parent or instructor and do not start swimming
Tell an adult when you feel unwell. Do not start swimming; they can help decide what care you need.
07Which place at home can be dangerous for an unsupervised young child?
Answer: A filled bath, bucket or accessible fish tank
Young children can drown in small amounts of water. Adults must supervise and prevent unsupervised access to water around the home.
08You have passed a swimming stage. Does that mean you can swim without adult supervision?
Answer: No, a responsible adult still needs to supervise
Swimming skills are one layer of protection, not a substitute for active adult supervision.
09You are floating but need help. How can you attract attention without giving up your support?
Answer: Call for help and signal with one arm if you can do so safely
Keep your breathing and flotation support first. Call and signal for help when you can do so without losing that support.
10You need the toilet during swimming. What should you do?
Answer: Tell your instructor and take a toilet break
Use the toilet, not the pool. Tell the supervising adult before leaving the lesson so they know where you are.
