01At an unfamiliar pool, what is a safe way to enter when your instructor says it is clear?
Answer: Use the designated steps, ladder or taught controlled entry
Use a permitted, controlled entry and check that the landing area is clear. Never dive into unknown water.
02When should you drink water during a long swimming session?
Answer: Before, during suitable breaks and afterwards
You can lose fluid while swimming even when you do not notice sweating. Plan drinking breaks with your instructor.
03Which sunscreen is a sensible choice for outdoor swimming?
Answer: Broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher
Choose broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher and follow the label. Sunscreen works with shade and protective clothing, not instead of them.
04After swimming and towelling off, what should you do about sunscreen?
Answer: Reapply according to the label, including after swimming or towelling
Reapply about every two hours outdoors and after swimming, sweating or towelling, following the product's water-resistance instructions.
05You become dizzy or unwell during a lesson. What is the safest response?
Answer: Tell the instructor immediately and stop, getting help to leave the water safely
Stop and get adult help promptly. Do not self-medicate and resume without appropriate advice.
06The pool announces a lightning warning, although the sky above you looks bright. What should you do?
Answer: Leave the water and follow staff directions to a safe shelter
Follow the warning and staff instructions immediately. A clear patch of sky does not cancel a lightning alert.
07You tire during supervised practice and can float on your back. What is the safer choice?
Answer: Use your taught floating skill to rest and call for help
A controlled float can support breathing and rest. Alert your instructor; do not pull another person under.
08You see someone vomit in the pool. What should you do?
Answer: Tell the lifeguard or pool staff immediately and follow their instructions
Staff need to manage contamination and decide when the pool is safe to use again. Do not try to clean it yourself.
09Which plan protects you better from outdoor UV exposure?
Answer: Use shade, protective clothing and sunscreen together
Combine shade, suitable clothing and sunscreen. No sunscreen blocks every UV ray, and being in water does not make sun protection unnecessary.
10An object falls into water deeper than you can safely manage. What should you do?
Answer: Tell your instructor or an adult rather than attempting it alone
Object recovery is a supervised skill. A lost object is never worth risking your safety or practising underwater tasks alone.
